{"id":251,"date":"2018-03-09T00:13:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T07:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csispecialist.com\/?p=251"},"modified":"2018-03-09T00:14:09","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T07:14:09","slug":"extremely-long-file-names-and-directory-paths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csispecialist.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/09\/extremely-long-file-names-and-directory-paths\/","title":{"rendered":"Extremely long file names and directory paths."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 8pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\">File Name too long?\u00a0 Or perhaps along with the directory path it&#8217;s too long?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 8pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u00a0When copying files for backup from long directory paths you have probably come across an error, every so often, that says something like \u201cdirectory path too long would you like to skip this file?\u201d.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The reason for this is that you are usually only allowed a maximum of 244 characters in the file name so copying a path which has over 244 characters in the name fails.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This does not happen often but sometimes with networks and programs that tend to nest subdirectories names can become too long for this rule.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>With the introduction of Windows 10 (starting at revision 1607) Microsoft removed this limitation. However, this is not enabled by default to maintain compatibility.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>You must opt-in for this feature to work.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>There are two ways to do this, from the Registry or from the Group Policy editor (Not included in Windows Home).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 8pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\">For those of you that have Windows 10 Pro or above you can open the Group Policy Editor and navigate to <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Computer Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; System &gt; Filesystem &gt; Enable NTFS long paths<\/span> and set it to <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Enabled<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 8pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\">For any version of Windows 10 (including Home) you can make a Registry change.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Always remember that registry changes can damage your computer to the point of completely ruining it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do not make these changes unless you are comfortable with it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\">You will need to navigate to:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: 10.0pt;\">HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\FileSystem<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: 10.0pt;\"> and look for the DWORD: <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: 10.0pt;\">LongPathsEnabled<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: 10.0pt;\"> if it is not there, create it as a REG_DWORD 32 Bit.
