{"id":123,"date":"2016-04-25T20:05:20","date_gmt":"2016-04-26T03:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csispecialist.com\/?p=123"},"modified":"2016-04-25T20:14:45","modified_gmt":"2016-04-26T03:14:45","slug":"windows-xp-and-dns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csispecialist.com\/index.php\/2016\/04\/25\/windows-xp-and-dns\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows XP and DNS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DNS or Directory Name Service is how your browser finds a website from a name.\u00a0 For example when you type in csispecialist.com your browser looks it up on a DNS server and gets the correct address and then opens the page for you using that address.\u00a0\u00a0 It would be like asking where the local pub is and someone telling you it is on 712 Main Street so you can then can go to that specific address.<\/p>\n<p>Most DNS servers today update their information every 2 hours and sometimes even less.\u00a0 However when XP was around the servers only updated every 24 hours or more.\u00a0 If you are still running XP you can change this value with a registry edit.\u00a0 This edit works on newer systems as well but most current operating systems take the shorter time into account.<\/p>\n<p>The registry edit is as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">Under:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\ Services\\Dnscache\\Parameters<br \/>\n<\/span>Add the DWORD value: <strong>MaxCacheTtl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">then set the value (in decimal) to:\u00a0 <strong>7200<\/strong> <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">That sets it to expire entries that are 2 hours or older.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">Another thing that DNS does is cache negative entries.\u00a0 These are simply entries that did not resolve to a legitimate address.\u00a0\u00a0 If you use multiple DNS providers or are checking to see when a site comes up after setting it&#8217;s DNS this could also be useful.\u00a0 To do this there is another registry setting you can put in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The registry edit is as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">Under:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\ Services\\Dnscache\\Parameters<br \/>\n<\/span>Add the DWORD value: <strong>MaxNegativeCacheTtl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">then set the value (in decimal) to:\u00a0 <strong>0 <\/strong><strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">This will tell XP to stop caching stuff that&#8217;s not there. <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">After you have applied either or both of these registry settings you can reset the DNS cache on your computer by opening the command prompt and typing the following: <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\"><strong>ipconfig \/flushdns <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">Your computer should return:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">&#8220;Windows IP Configuration<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;\">Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DNS or Directory Name Service is how your browser finds a website from a name.
